The song opens with the line, "je suis le poinçonneur des Lilas" or "I am the ticket puncerh of Lilas Station". I love the depressing irony of the song; it just seems so French. Afterwards, you can watch an earlier video with subtitles here. "Des petits trous, des petits trous, des petits trous..."
Holy Shit holy shit holy SHIT! Are you excited for the Hardly Strictly Blue Grass Festival?!!?!? I know I am! We are EXACTLY a month away from one of the best festivals around the world, and even better it is free and in our City. Like always we have our staples Emmylou Harris, Steve Townes Earle, Allison Moorer, Dr John and The Wronglers (MC Hammer will be returning this year as well). But this year we will also be treated to the sonic pleasures of Broken Social Scene, Chris Isaak, DeVotchKa, Thurston Moore, Kurt Vile & the Violators, Devil Makes Three, M. Ward, Bright Eyes, Southern Culture On The Skids, Robert Plant and The Joy Band, Kris Kristofferson & Merle Haggard, Gillian Welch, The Low Anthem, Cass McCombs, Elbow and MORE!! The festival will be held in our very own Golden Gate Park from Friday, September 30th to Sunday, October 2nd. You can check out the full line-up and more here at the official website.
This was filmed just outside of Outside Lands, presumably on Sunday the day he opened the main stage. Man, people just don't sing like this anymore. Amazing.
Okay, this is LONG overdue. I really haven't been on my game since I am just now posting on this artist, but if you haven't heard of The Weeknd yet you need to now.
Here are some tracks and if you dig 'em you can download his self-released free album, House Of Ballons, from his site here. The first two tracks are from House Of Balloons, the third and fourth are from an unreleased sophomore effort and a Drake remix respectively.
My favorite act from the Pitchfork Music Festival. DJ shadow is a legend. His debut album Endtroducing, which this track is on, is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first album entirely composed of samples. DJ Shadow's ground breaking concept album was recorded from '94 - '96 at San Francisco's Glue Factory. And on the cover is Lyrics Born and Chief Xcel in a Sacramento record shop. Pretty fucking rad.
Madvillian is the collaboration of MF Doom and Madlib. But this song is written as Viktor Vaughn, Doom's real name, and it's about how his girl is cheating on him with his alter ego Metal Face Doom, hence "tin head". Fucking great. Wish it was longer. If you want to dig the sample click here.
Found these guys from the San Francisco Mixtape Society and they've got some solid mixes up. According to their webist, The Mixtape Club is an organization dedicated to the art of the mixtape. Ten people, ten tracks, ten album covers every month, pretty fucking rad. I've been digging Flapjack's 17 (probably because I actually know and like all the artists he's chosen), but all the others I've checked out have been rewarding. Here's a link to Flapjack's stream, check out a few others while you're there.
I've been digging Bodies Of Water's newest album Twist Again for awhile now. For a few days it was free to download, but sadly it is no longer available for free. However, you can still stream it online for free. Check it out here and if you like, consider supporting the artists.
To commemorate The Strokes 10 year Anniversary of Is This It? music blog Stereogum compiled a free digital tribute album featuring indie artists like The Morning Benders, Peter, Bjorn and John, Heem (from Das Racist) and more. It's a fun album and you can grab it off their website here. Enjoy.
Oh my god I'm sooooo excited. I was just listening to Tyler the Creator's Summer Camp mix and his favorite Grizzly Bear song is my favorite Grizzly Bear song. I know that I'm acting like a 13 year old girl who just found out that her crush likes the same toppings on his pizza and starts gushing, but I just can't help.
It's officially summer and that means its time to spend all our days in parks. This Sunday July 3rd the festival is having an indie concert for an Independence Weekend! Neko Case headlines and local sensation The Dodos will be opening for her. I saw Neko Case two years ago at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and she killed. There was so much heart in her voice, it was just vibrant and alive. You really can't miss her this Sunday at 2PM, especially for free. I thought in order to kick off the weekend I'd share some of my favorite tracks from both artists. Dig it.
Neko Case :: Deep Red Bells
Neko Case :: This Tornado Loves You (Live on Letterman)
M83 has announced a new album. No date has been set for it's release yet, but I'm sure it will come in time. I am excited about this video not only because I thoroughly enjoy their 2008 release Saturdays=Youth, but also the video shows shots of San Francisco's own Palace of Fine Arts, The California Academy of Science's living roof and a shot rising in between buildings and then peaking with a San Francisco skyline blanketed in fog. Also, there's a jellyfish presumably from The Monterrey Bay Aquarium. Pretty cool I think.
Afterthought - Did anybody else notice the dozens of keyboards in Anthony Gonzalez's studio? Or how about the floppies?!?!
Holy shit! This is by far two of the the most energizing video's I have seen in a long time. I love this! Not only do they start with Odd Future beats, which as everyone knows I also love, but it's how they use OF's instrumentals as a foundation to improv and explore their own sounds. It's Hip hop meets jazz, and I think it sounds beautiful. You can download the second session here, just right click and save link as.
"The pot is full of secrets to be told." Love it! This song totally sounds like Radiohead, but I love Radiohead so this is a good thing. Frankly, it's amazing. After all these years, they are still producing good and influential music. In today's culture of disposable singles, one hit wonders and the infinite hype bands that come out, I find comfort in a band like this.
Gotta make up for lost time. Here's the newest video from Tyler the Creature featuring the melodic voice of Frank ocean. I love this video. Like Tyler, the video is all over the place. He shows off his demented sense of humor, his obsessive love and of course his creepy mask. Check out Frank playing the girl's father and Jasper's antic at the lake. Lovin' it.
It's been a minute since I've posted up here, my bad. So Coldplay has a new track with Brian Eno back in the producer's chair. The track's much more chipper than Viva la Vida. Can't say I love the song, but I found the sample on Stereogum and I do love it. Peter Allen is a riot in this video! Dig both below.
A great cover of Ariel's Pink Haunted Graffiti's "Round and Round". Totally awesome that these kids teachers is teaching them contemporary songs, especially from the indie scene. Read more here.
Hard to tell with all this rain, but it's spring now. And with the slow release of Winter's grip on the days, we all could use some music to cozy up with. Here's a consideration.
Got this idea off the youtube page but tweaked it a little (step one). Step one: Smoke a blunt. Step two: go to rainymood.com and press play. Step three: Play the track and make sure it's the right volume (loud). Step four: Dig.
Wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold up. Burial. Four Tet. AND Thom Yorke?!!!?! SPLOOGE! The three have been loosely tied together through various remixes and collaborative (Burial and Four Tet) but I never saw this coming. All are AMAZING, ground-breaking artists and though it is supposed to be split with Burial on the A side (Ego) and Thom and Four Tet on the B side (Mirror) it certainly sounds as if everyone had a influence in both tracks. The 12" vinyl reportedly sold out instantly, but if you dig it you can sign-up to there mailing list and they'll inform you of re-stock. These tracks are just gorgeous and mind-blowing. Hope you enjoy.
Glasser :: Apply Trippy video, sweet almost meditative song.
Bright Eyes :: Four Winds I think this album, Cassadaga, and this song show another side of Bright Eyes that people who don't know the artists dont realize exists. I much prefer his folk/ country inspired music to his better known emo-esque work.
Animal Collective :: Peacebone An amazing track. I love the dissonace and chaos in the begining and how it all vibrates into place forming this dancy frenetic hook that just circles around you until you're part of the frenzy. It's amazing, literally the song that got turned me on to Animal Collective. Also check out "My Gurls" for a great song set to an awesomely trippy video.
Presets :: Are You The One? I'm intriuged by this bands energy, and hopefully get to check them out down South.
I love that name Hoodie Allen. But even more, I love that Electric Light Orchestra's Evil Woman is being sampled by Mike Posner. I think they add some very interesting things to the song keeping it alve in the new millenium.
I know, I know, you're thinking, "more of this odd future shit?" My bad, but I just can't get over it, they are so good. Here's the full length of Yonkers, set to be the first single off of the upcoming Goblin album.
Sorry about the delay Noisepop and work took more of my energy than I expected and haven't been up on everything. Anyways, here are the bands for those days.
I've mostly been posting smaller opening acts so far, so here's one of the headliners, The Chemical Borther's video for Do It Again. Unfortunately, the video has been banned from sharing so you'll have to use that link and sit through a commercial, but the song and video are well worth the wait.
Royksopp are planning on releasing their newest single from the their album "Senior" which came out this past fall. The single is entitled Forsaken cowboy and is a brilliantly lush fusion of sounds. The single will include a previously unreleased b-side called "Keyboard Milk" listen to it and watch it below.
here is a track from german electronic music producer Siriusmo. He is releasing a full length album called "Mosaik" which has new tracks and also some old tracks from his older EPs
Tonight at Mighty Kid Koala will be performing. Check out this video, he's pretty amazing. He also has a show on Sunday where he will be performing a 4 hour set titled music to draw too. Tonight's show should be more upbeat, but if you are in the mood for artisst and crafts, and milk and cookies, stop by Public Works.
I saw Geographer and Butterfly Bones again yesterday. Like always they played great sets. Not to get too off topic, but I ran into hella people at the concert. It's so crazy what a small city San Francisco is. But it is this great city that produces bands like this.
Since I skipped yesterday, here's another band. I first got into these guys during my stay in Amsterdam and have been grooving to them ever since. Shpongle is known for their use of both electronica as well as traditional instruments. Very heady music, designed for an electric shaman or something. And as you can see by their performance and the title of this track, they are huge supporters of mind expanding psychoactive drugs. Hope you enjoy.
This track is from the movie Once. Set an Ireland, the musical film stars Glen Hansard (of the Frames) and Markéta Irglová. The score is beautiful and the duo went on to win an Oscar for one of the songs from the movie. Later, they formed a real band and named themselves The Swell Season. Hope you enjoy.
The 19th annual Noisepop Independent Culture Festival sets off tonight. Dan Deacon is playing at the Independent in the City and Yo La Tengo will be playing in Oakland at Fox theatre. Since I'll be over in the Da Town for a Boston Celtics at GS Warriors game, I'm hoping to catch the end Yo La Tengo show afterwards and see Deacon on Wednesday as he'll be be playing again closer to my work. Here's a random track from Yo La Tengo, I don't really know or like them that well.
So Coachella is coming up. 52 days infact, I just happen to have about 54 acts that I want to see at Coachella, so kinda like an advent calender, I plan to post a song a day from an artists that I am looking forward to seeing at Coachella. Today's? The band known as !!! (pronounced chk chk chk) with their single "Must be the Moon".
Speaking of Sandwiches... Tyler the Creator and Hodgy Beats performed with The Roots on the Jimmy Fallon show last week. It's amazing that they landed the gig because these kids are freaking nuts.
Here's a new track from Wavves, fresh off Nathan Williams twitter account.Wavves is coming to The City next week for SF's 19th Annual Noisepop Independent Music Festival and will be performing with Best Coast at The Regency Ballroom on Feb 26.
So I stumbled across this pretty cool website called songkick. It'll track artists that you like, and let you know when they come to town for concerts. They have a very wide range of artists and they even allow you to sync your facebook, last.fm and pandora and will automatically add artists from those site that you like to their tracker. Pretty sweet way to keep track without having to check all the venues in your area. Anyways, here's a link, hope it's helpful.
Fuck, I can't get off this Odd Future shit. This is the first official video from Tyler, as he just signed a one-album deal with XL Records, an exciting prospect. The album has already been titled "Goblin" and is set to release in April. For two years, Tyler has been releasing albums with OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) for free on their Tumblr (whatever that is). You can download those albums on their website. The song has the trademark violence that Tyler is known for, and the video matches him with its demented depictions of cockroach eating, vomitting, nose bleeds and suicide. Recently, Tyler has been drawing a lot of comparisons to Eminem and his sophmore album "Marshall Mather LP", which is an understandable conclusion given the two artists proclivity towards violence, misogyny and their lyrical gifts. Hope you enjoy the video, I'm already counting the days until Goblin's release.
Pretty sweet video. The band held a private house concert in an attic with a cover charge of one household lamp and filmed this video there. Pretty cool idea.
Check out this track on the fader website. They say the song "builds like a sunrise", but I prefer sunset being on the Left Coast and all, but i like the imagery nonetheless. Shimmery and bright, I think this a great song.
It is officially over for the White Stripes, one of my favorite bands. Meg and Jack White have called it quits and are not going to be making anymore albums or performing ever again. The duo had made 6 studio albums together and always donned their iconic red, white and black. You can read their letter to the fans here and Enjoy some of their songs below. I'm posting some of my favorite songs and videos, most of which are off of White Blood Cells. If you're a fan of Jack White's other projects, The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs, don't worry. He will still be working with them.
"Seven Nation Army" Elephant
"Fell In Love With A Girl" White Blood Cells
"Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground" White Blood Cells
Rufus is a new electronic pop act from Australia. They have released their first ep on their own label called Monekeleon the ep has this song and another song called "We Left" on it.. This song has been stuck in my head for a few days now. check them out they're sweet. http://www.myspace.com/rufussounds
Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator team up to make EarlWolf and grab the music from Gucci Mane's Lemonade. There's no question whose is better. "Watch him count the bodies like bitches be counting calories" I love it. These guys have been called horror core and with all the cussing and talk about killing and rape, it's easy to imagine how they got that reputation. However, I think these guys are better than a first glance may let on. They have an excellent sense of flow, timing and space. And Tyler creates 90% of the duo's beats, which he has a great ear for. The hooks are catchy and the beats heavy. For all the violence in their lyrics, veiled underneath is an equally impressive amount of skill.
Been a long time coming, but Seattle based Fleet Foxes are finally releasing there sophmore album. They first mention working on it back in 2009 (interview)The album is set to come out on May 3rd and this will be the title track. Hope you enjoy it.
This is from 16 year old London bloke aka Archy Marshall. He reminds me of Joe Strummer or The Libertines, but with a La Roux haircut. I just love the song.
Listen to this sweet Starfucker song, wait for the cool ending!
check out Starfucker's new album "Reptilians" which comes out in March (but has already leaked online)
Here's a cool track from brooklyn-based Creep. The appropriately named duo reached out to Romy Madley-Croft of the XX to lay down some vocals. A pretty sweet addition. Like their music, the video is a little goth-y but adds cool flashy light boards and other glimmering effects to pair with the bands elctro roots. Also noteworthy, the video is produced and directed by Fisherspooner's Warren Fischer. Oh, and the band's myspace is one of the creepiest I've visted.
"Second Chance" comes off their sixth album, Gimme Some. To be released on March 29th via StarTime International, this album sets out to trade out the keyboards and sample pads of 2009's Living Thing for guitars and more traditional pop instruments. I hope you enjoy the track, I know I'll be at Amoeba on the 29/3 to pick this up.
I was pretty much blown away by Lone's Cluster Dreams EP which dropped in 2009... which I highly recommend. Emerald Fantasy is his newest and is pretty fresh sounding, check it out.
Ho Man, this is wanna of my favorite bands and they are coming out with another album. The bands sophomore effort has been titled Blue Songs and I'm anxious to see how it holds up to the bands previous album.
Holy Shit. This tracked took me by surprise and straight melted my face. Reminds me of Amsterdam. You gotta be in the mood to move, but this song will rip. Hope y'all dig it. Grab it here from Fader: Sleigh Bells, “Tell ’Em (Diplo Remix)” MP3
Diplo and Afrojack produced this remix and replaced Busta Rhymes with Twista. Twista's speed and delivery are insane and I love the hook, it sounds other-worldly. Say what you will about Chris Brown, he's clearly the weakest link on this track, but from beats to flow, this track goes.
With every New Year comes new music. However, what excites me most about the New Year is the look back on the past year's best music. I always check out a few lists, including magazines like Spin, Rolling Stone, Paste and XLR8R and a few other. I also check some blogs like GorillavsBear, Stereogum, and Pitchfork, but my favorite is always the list compiled by Hype Machine. Each Year Hypem.com releases a list of music bloggers top 50 artists, songs, and albums. The albums section is what makes this list stand out because you can stream each album and determine whether or not you like it. So here it is, grab the link here. A few albums that I've enjoyed off the list so far are Two Door Cinema Club (kinda like a Foals meets Tokyo Police Club sound, very dance-y pop) and Gorillaz's Plastic Beach, Radio Dept, and Janelle Monae. Check it out, and see what you like.
Ignore the video, it's weak. The song however, is beautiful. Covered here by Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, otherwise known as She and Him, You Really Got A Hold On Me is originally a Smokey Robinson song. You can listen to both and see which one you like better. I can't make up my mind. This track is off She and Him's Debut album "Vol. 1". If you like the track you can check out more from them here, at their Myspace.
Pretty sick track. The song starts out with soulful and longing vocals set to a pretty minimal beat and guitar accompaniment. But then you watch as he layers, warps and twists the song into a reverb heavy creation. I think its pretty sick, dig it? Live at Maida Vale.
The soundcloud link to this song has been taken down, but good ole youtube can't be stopped. Here's the track again and the original if you're curious. I like both, and the video's pretty sweet. Seeing her emote as she sings and the dude twirling are sick. I'm also a fan of the visual of the bass on the glasses of water. Dig.
Check out a new this new Lil Wayne track here. Set to be on Tha Carter IV, the track is produced by bangladesh, the producer who lil wayne chose not to credit with his work on "A Milli". Fucking Sick.
I really love this song and the video is pretty real, though I don't quite understand it. The video, directed by Spike Jonze, takes scenes from a short film titled "Scenes From The Suburbs". Also noteworth, at 2:36 Win and Regine Butler (the two lead vocalists) make a cameo as cops, pretty cool. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
