Gregory Porter :: 1960 What?

I cannot stop listening to this. Highly recommend the mixtape linked below.

Sun Glitters :: Beside Me (Essay's Calm Interpretation)

Preferably, you have headphones on when you listen. Be patient, close your eyes, and let your vibrations align with the sound's. Relax and sink into the groove.

Nicolas Jaar :: Space Is Only Noise [full album]

Get it while it's up and if you like it, buy it.

"It's the kind of grand statement I make, and regret. But I honestly feel we're at the beginning of a renaissance in music. It's an amazing time. Mount Kimbie, James Blake, a lot of underground LA hip-hop -- it's happening. We're all kids making music without studios, producers or other musicians -- without anyone giving us money or telling us what to do -- because we want to make really honest work. That's different. That's never happened before." - Nicolas Jaar

Fiona Apple :: Hot Knife

A good friend sent me this video and it's been on repeat since. Sounds like Fiona's following Merrill Garbus' directions some on this track.

Sneaker Pimps :: Bloodsport

Fenua

Fenua :: E Vivo Tupuna

Fenua :: Te Mama Rava

Fenua :: Paradisia

Fenua :: Maeva Taaroa

Fenua :: E Hiro

Fenua is a Tahitian band introduced to me by my father in high school. It reminds me of summers in Orange County, driving up and down 1 in his red truck. Of fish tacos and sun. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do sans nostalgia.

Coachella # 39 -- Miike Snow

Work in Progress

Miike Snow :: Devil's Work

La Sera :: Break My Heart

A member of Dum, Dum, Girls, La Sera has been working on her solo career for a good minute now. Love this song, hope you do too.

Coachella # 49 -- The Weeknd

The Weeknd :: The Knowing

The Weeknd :: High For This

A perfect opener.

The Weeknd :: What You Need (Unofficial)

Super Excited for the Weeknd. Probably the artist I'm looking forward to seeing most at Coachella. They follow, and champion, this recent trend of revealing the emotional sacrifice required to thrive in the party lifestyle. This trend is also displayed on Kanye's My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy.
The Weeknd represents the darker side of R&B, depicting not only the trysts in the champagne room, but highlighting the hangover afterwards, the lonliness of the come down, the unapologetic hedonism and the collateral damage that results. Even their name reflects this subject, suggesting that they have become weakened by the weekend. Whether they mean physically weakened or morally weakened is for them to know. Also noteworthy, The Weeknd released all three of their albums (House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence) to download for free at their website here.

Dig the crazy video for "The Knowing". Shot in Jankyvision the video is raw and creative and wicked and absolutely brilliant.

Coachella # ??? -- Azelia Banks

This shit gets me movin like little else does.

The Hives :: Diabolic Scheme

Coachella # 26 -- David Guetta

Homeboy's sure to have some crazy cameo's with him.

Coachella # 22 -- Girls

Girls :: Lust For Life

Girls :: Laura

It's funny to think that I will be driven hundreds of miles to see a band that resides in San Francisco. Oh well, I can hardly wait.

Coachella # 20 -- Florence + the Machine

Florence + the Machine :: Drumming Song

Florence + the Machine :: Rabbit Heart(Raise It Up)

Previously on...

Missed her performance two years ago at Coachella. That won't happen this year.

Coachella# 33 -- Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar :: A.D.H.D.

Kendrick Lamar :: Rigamortis

A member of Black Hippy. Ridiculous flow, laid back yet quick, he spits so effortlessly.

Coachella #16 -- Explosions in the Sky

This lone star state quartet are quite the rare specimen. They have a drummer, two guitarists and a bassists. No vocals. Their songs are kinda long as the build and surge, so take a minute to listen to the track. Should be a fun show, their fan base is pretty committed.

Coachella #13 -- DJ Shadow

I saw DJ Shadow at last summer in Chicago and he was off the hook. Now Pitchfork is fun, but it has nothing on the sheer enormity of Coachella. I am mucho excited to hear DJ Shadow's madness blast through 15 foot speakers. Also, his lightshow blew at Pitchfork because there was still light out during his set. In the Sahara tent? Not a problem. For music, dig on the link below.

Huun Huur Tu :: Kongurai

An old friend posted this recently. Apparently, Tuvan throat singing is pretty awesome. Tuva is a Russian Federation on the Mongolian border.

Pusha T :: Trouble on My Mind (ft Tyler, the Creator)

Just realized this gem wasn't up on the blog. More hilarity from Tyler. This time he's with Clipse's Pusha T. Dig the video as they mimic each other on each other's verses. Pretty fun watching Pusha T pretend to be Tyler.

Schoolboy Q :: Fantasy (ft Jhene Aiko)

"Lemme be your fiend, you be nicotine"

Hodgy Beats, Domo Gensys, Tyler, the Creator :: Rella (Left Brain prod.)

Re-dunk-ulous. These kids have the craziest ideas. Laser-jizz that turns people to cats? Check. Slapping a black girl asian? Covered. Coke head Tyler centuar? That's an affirmative! Slick and haunting beats courtesy of one Left Brain? Winner, winner, CHICKEN DINNER! This shit's bananas.

Coachella #3 - Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys :: 505

Arctic Monkeys :: Do Me A Favour

Arctic Monkeys :: Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But...

A few of my favourite tracks from the young lads across the pond. With four studio albums in six years, these guys will have a lot of material to draw from for their set. It is sure to be a great performance.

Coachella #1 - A$AP Rocky

A$AP Rocky :: Wassup (Clams Casino prod.)

A$AP Rocky :: Peso

A$AP Rocky is not the best rapper. From Harlem, he's part of the up-and-coming generation of rappers that are taking the internet and blogsphere by storm and has collaborated with many of his contemporaries(read OF, Black Hippy, Based God, etc). But what A$AP lacks in lyrical content he makes up in swagger and productions. Listen to his music, preferrably with a blunt in hand, and see if you don't instantly feel chilled out and swagged out at the same time. Like what you hear? More below...

A$AP Rocky :: Pretty Flacko

A$AP Rocky :: Bass

Coachella #2 - aarabMUZIK

I know watching a guy tap on a soundboard is not the most exciting performance, but aarabMUZIK is the exception. With blistering speed, laser precision, metronome-rivaling rythym and exceptional creativity this is one beatbreaker that is sure to wow. Dig the videos and the links below to get a further look into this mad beat genius' world.

For the dub-step inclined: Skrillex better than skrillex

To give an idea of a live set: Araab Muzik killin' the MPC LIVE in Paris, France

Wye Oak :: Are You That Somebody (Aaliyah Cover )

The Independent Feb. 24th Noisepop 2012

Pretty swag cover. Great song, with a great riff at the end. Love me some Noisepop.

Jai Paul :: BTSTU

A good friend played this for me, and it has been on repeat for me ever since. It's his only track for now, but I'm not worried. I like this song enough, that I'm sure it'll still be blasting when his next track(s?) come out.

Coachella 2012

Coachella is on the horizon and I hope you have your tickets. After an initial survey of the line-up I have tallied 47 bands that I am excited or intrigued to see. Starting 47 days out I will attempt to post a track (or more) by an artist each day leading up to the Festival. Wish me luck.

SchoolBoy Q

Schoolboy Q :: There He Go from Habits & Contradiction

Schoolboy Q :: Blessed (feat. Kendrick Lamar) from Habits & Contradictions

Fuck man, I love the productions on this album and the flow is smooth like butter. I know it's a little early, but for me, this is easily one of the best albums of the year so far.

Santigold :: Big Mouth

Who knew that Santigold was spelled M-I-A?

Sunday, January 15, 2012

Pogo :: Upular (3-D Audio Version)

A good friend sent this to me. I instantly loved the track, but it is essential that you use good headphones to properly experience it. A little green might help too.
Here's the link, and really grab some headphones.

Mixtape Club :: Session 29

I've really been digging this mixtape from Versus titled Sanity. Catch it here. It's funky and chill. Chilly-funk? Funky-chill? Who knows. All I know is that its crackin'. If you like Toro y Moi, Isaac Hayes, or Dionne Warwick this should resonate with you. And don't be afraid to wander, tons of great music curated on this site. No matter the mood you are bound to find something.

Gotye :: Somebody That I Used To Know (ft Kimbra)

My roommate turned me on to this track, funny because I guess it's been all over the radio. But it's practically on repeat at the spot. I really like it so I'm glad it gets played so often. Also blog-worthy is this cover also introduced by my roommates.
